The 2011 BSRA National Championships in Vegas rocked AWFS once again with full-throttle fun!
The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of more than 800 people who packed the stands to see 24 competitors send their sanders roaring down the 75-foot track.
In the stock category, first place was awarded to Tim Westrope, of Perfect Match Stain. His sander, Perfect Match beat crowd-favorite Deft Leppard; entered by Brian Hill from Deft, Inc.
Brian Hill’s Deft Leppard sander has been a strong competitor at many of the circuit races held on the west coast.
One of the more memorable moments included the brother-against-brother face off with Josh and Max Hunter from Western Dovetail. Although Max built both sanders, Josh ended up taking home the first place trophy after a race so close we had to rely on the track’s computer to determine the actual winner.
Judges were Marguerite Hoffman from AWFS and Erland Russell from TigerStop, who selected Steve Christianson’s sander, The Mighty Kalakala as Best Dressed. This impressive replica of the M.V. Kalakala, a ferry known as “the world’s first streamlined vessel” has a long and colorful history, part of which included servicing the Bremerton-Seattle run for 32 years.
The special Judge’s Award went to a young man by the name of Nick Moore, for his monstrous creation, Franken Sander, which took quite a beating at the finish line. Nick accepted his trophy holding the parts and pieces of his creative sander.
